OSA Reunion – The Hempsall Years

This year the theme for our reunion was the Hempsall Years – 1985-1995.  Whilst not as full-on as last year, we had a lovely evening at the College reminiscing with old friends, or should I say, ‘long standing friends’, some friendships spanning over 40 years!  The College’s catering team ably assisted by the Sixth Formers throughout the evening, produced an outstanding meal which the evening’s proceedings evolved around.  Pre-dinner drinks and chat were enjoyed and then following a short welcome introduction from Zoe Harrison, who highlighted various changes from the College during the 1988 era compared to the current College along with the modern-day purpose and recent accomplishments of the OSA, before being addressed by Dr David Hempsall.  He recounted the days and the College which he had been Headmaster of and the changes in the Independent sector.  He also highlighted the change in the manner and behaviour of its students over its 122 years, thankfully always for the better, and how hopefully this will continue to change positively in order for the school to survive and remain.  With the vast investment plans in sport and boarding that the College has for the coming 2 years this surely will be the case.

It was lovely to see as many former staff as pupils all together enjoying the evening and the halcyon days gone by, all remembered fondly with our rose tinted glasses firmly on!

Special thanks to everyone for attending especially Dr Hempsall and to the Holroyd Howe catering team at Scarborough College.  Next March we will be looking forward to welcoming back those pupils and former and current staff from the Kirkup, Lee and Nixon era.  Another night not to be missed.

Date for your diary – November Reunion weekend 17 and 18 November 2018.

Richard Wilkinson’s book on David Lloyd George

We are delighted to inform OS of Richard Wilkinson’s (Head 1974-85) newly published work on Lloyd George, available from all good bookshops and on-line.

“David Lloyd George left a profound political legacy, despite being described by the wife of his successor, Herbert Asquith, as a ‘gambler without foresight’. He is, of course, best known as the Prime Minister who led Britain to victory in World War I, but his contribution to domestic politics was similarly impressive. As Chancellor of the Exchequer he introduced pensions and national insurance against sickness and unemployment, while as Prime Minister he extended democracy by giving votes to women. Yet Lloyd George was compromised by his flaws as a human being. Vain, cruel, capricious and dishonest, at times his notoriously corrupt nature threatened to damage the British political system.”

Some Reviews:

“Providing a unique new perspective on one of the most phenomenally-talented but also one of the most phenomenally-flawed of British Prime Ministers, this book will be essential reading for anyone interested in modern British politics and history.”(Amazon)

“Wilkinson’s captivating prose throughout is vigorous, direct, and often amusing and thought-provoking. There is not a dull page in the book from cover to cover. At the same time, its purpose is entirely serious.” (G Wales)

“The question posed by the book has still to be answered: statesman or scoundrel? A bit of both, concludes Wilkinson, with the balance tipped in favour of the consummate politician.” (Daily Mail Fri 9th March 2018). The full review is available on:

Thomas Trueman – Request for Work Experience etc – Physics and related fields

I am a recent MSc Astrophysics graduate from Queen Mary University of London, also holding a BSc degree in Physics with Astrophysics from the University of York. I am looking for any work-related connections in a field relevant to my degrees. My particular interest is in nuclear astrophysics, but I also have a wide interest in other physics related matters.

I am also more than happy to consider voluntary opportunities which can give me some work experience. Please contact [email protected] if you can help

Zara Teasdale – Request for Work Experience etc – Law

I am in the first year of studying IB at Scarborough College,  my higher subjects being History, Economics and Biology. Alongside these I do French, Maths and English Literature at standard level.  I’m particularly interested in studying Law at university; an area of International law or Corporate Law specifically.

In regards to universities, I hope to go to a Russell Group university, ideally being Oxbridge or one of the London universities.

I am interested in gaining knowledge about a Law Degree or time at Oxbridge through the OSA, and if possible gaining work experience in this sector.  I am hoping that the knowledge and advice I am able to gain from the OSA will help me in choosing my university and whether law is the right path for me to pursue.

Please contact: [email protected] if you can help.

Millie Hodgson – Request for Work Experience etc – Fashion Industry

I am currently a student at Scarborough College in my first year of the IB diploma and my goal is to pursue a career within the fashion industry. I have very little experience within this industry and I am open to any opportunities I may be presented with.

I am due to finish my time at Scarborough College in the May of 2019 which will lead me on to a university course of some type within this sector.

The fashion industry is vast with many elements and I am willing to try my hand at anything which may come my way. At this point all I am after is the experience regardless of the field. I truly am open to anything!

Areas which interest me specifically are more the behind the scenes workings of the fashion industry, the elements which help to make fashion what it is today. The business, the marketing, the photography, the designing, the journalism etc. My spectrum of interest is broad and I want more knowledge within the industry which is why I aim to expose myself to as much experience as possible in order to hopefully narrow down my options and eventually come to a decision as to how I wish to pursue a career in my future.

My interests at school revolve mainly around my chosen higher subjects of Business, Art and English.

Opportunities in Scarborough are limited to say the least as I am sure OSA members fully understand and I would appreciate anything anyone has to offer me whether it be a placement, advice, mentorship or guidance.
